Benjamin Fowler is a Lecturer in Drama, Theatre & Performance at the University of Sussex. His research focuses on directorial practices in contemporary European theatre. He has published on practitioners including Thomas Ostermeier, Katie Mitchell, Nicolas Stemann, Simon Stephens, and Sebastian Nübling, seeking to reveal the interdependence of work across borders and countering the critical and scholarly tendency of separating national styles of practice into distinct silos. Ben recently edited a series of films and a book on The Theatre of Katie Mitchell (Digital Theatre+ and Routledge, 2019) featuring the designer Alex Eales and the director of photography Leo Warner, combining practitioner perspectives with scholarly interventions. Having trained on the Birkbeck MFA in Theatre Directing and following a freelance career as an assistant director at venues including the RSC, the Almeida, and Opera Holland Park, Ben pursues research that decodes working practices. He is currently finishing a monograph on the British theatre director Katie Mitchell, which draws on extensive interviews and observation of rehearsals in the UK, France and Germany (Routledge, 2020).
